The funny thing about delays is that nobody thinks about the delays. We think about the word, about its beaming red letters above a dual carriageway, of the effects of them, of how late they will make us for our next check-point of the day. Sure. But nobody actually looks past that.
Perhaps this is from where the serenity of ‘TWO DELAYS’ grows. The small press publication contains just two poems and two blank pages. The pages surround themselves to form a small square facing in on one another; two delays pushing each other back, whilst keeping each other balanced.
The first poem reads:
by the road
a wood
or green
digression
and the second:
on the table
a book
or light-filled
glade
The delicacy of the product lies in the layout and form. The colouring of the pieces provides a gentle voice to the words, and the association between the font colours and the featured colour-related words constructs a clear starting point for the reader to build an image in their minds. The symmetry established within this publication makes it free-flowing and peaceful, whilst the natural, physical closing of the pamphlet when it is propped upright brings a sense of closure to it.
